Summary

New York Times bestseller Lisa Kleypas returns with an enthralling and steaming romance between a widowed lady and a Scot on the run—who may have connections to one of London's most noble families。

“The devil never tries to make people do the wrong thing by scaring them。 He does it by tempting them。”

Lady Merritt Sterling, a strong-willed young widow who’s running her late husband’s shipping company, knows London society is dying to catch her in a scandal。 So far, she’s been too smart to provide them with one。 But then she meets Keir MacRae, a rough-and-rugged Scottish whisky distiller, and all her sensible plans vanish like smoke。 They couldn’t be more different, but their attraction is powerful, raw and irresistible。

From the moment Keir MacRae arrives in London, he has two goals。 One: don’t fall in love with the dazzling Lady Merritt Sterling。 Two: avoid being killed。

So far, neither of those is going well。

Keir doesn’t know why someone wants him dead until fate reveals his secret connection to one of England’s most powerful families。 His world is thrown into upheaval, and the only one he trusts is Merritt。

Their passion blazes with an intensity Merritt has never known before, making her long for the one thing she can’t have from Keir MacRae: forever。 As danger draws closer, she’ll do whatever it takes to save the man she loves。。。 even knowing he might be the devil in disguise。

I started this book at around 9am this morning, it is about 10 to 5pm and I'm done。 Did I mention I'm at work? Once you start one of Lisa Kleypas's books, you can't put it down no matter what you're doing。 And nothing is better than having Sebastian in any book。 Love, love, loved it。 I started this book at around 9am this morning, it is about 10 to 5pm and I'm done。 Did I mention I'm at work? I loved this book。 It was so romantic。 Basically they both fell in love/lust with each other at first sight。 The way the hero talked to her and thought about her was wonderful。 She admitted it was crazy to want someone so much when they didn't have anything in common, he's from Scotland she's from England, he's a whiskey distiller, she's a shipping company owner, etc。The heroine is the daughter of Westcliff and Lillian from the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas。 It was nice to see them many yea I loved this book。 It was so romantic。 Basically they both fell in love/lust with each other at first sight。 The way the hero talked to her and thought about her was wonderful。 She admitted it was crazy to want someone so much when they didn't have anything in common, he's from Scotland she's from England, he's a whiskey distiller, she's a shipping company owner, etc。The heroine is the daughter of Westcliff and Lillian from the Wallflowers series by Lisa Kleypas。 It was nice to see them many years later still very happy and in love。SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER SPOILERSPOILERS。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。。The hero turns out to be the biological son of Sebastian (from Devil in Winter by Lisa Kleypas)。 Sebastian used to be a rake and slept with many women before he met his wife。 He was always faithful to his wife。 The hero is his son from an affair with a married woman years before he met his wife。 He never knew about his son。 The woman's husband refused to let her tell him。 He found out after she wrote him a letter on her deathbed。 She asked him to be executor of her will and give their son her fortune, if his son was still alive。 The hero has no idea。 He knew he was adopted but never knew his parents。 He looks exactly like his biological father。 Everyone notices it right away。 So I took off 1 star because of all the drama surrounding the hero's parents。 The romance was amazing but I felt a little bad for the hero。 。。。more

Any book that has Sebastian St Vincent in it, even if he’s not the main character, is a very good book。 Loved the direction that Kleypas has taken this series。 As good as her other novels!

I was looking forward to this book after hearing our dear Sebastian and Evie (I named my now 10 year old daughter Evangeline) were making an appearance。 It was like seeing what old friends were up to。 Including beloved characters from past books didn’t take away from the couple in the book at all。 The dialogue made me smile several times。 The crux of the book could have really been awful handled by another author but it was beautifully and believably written。 Can’t wait to now listen to the audi I was looking forward to this book after hearing our dear Sebastian and Evie (I named my now 10 year old daughter Evangeline) were making an appearance。 It was like seeing what old friends were up to。 Including beloved characters from past books didn’t take away from the couple in the book at all。 The dialogue made me smile several times。 The crux of the book could have really been awful handled by another author but it was beautifully and believably written。 Can’t wait to now listen to the audiobook! 。。。more

Lisa Kleypas has always been the queen of historical romance for me 。。。。Her novels are always entertaining , sweet and fascinating 。 But this novel has the " Insta- Love , Insta everything " kinda trope , which I don't tolerate at all 😂😂 。。。And because of that I didn't like the srory but at the same time it was heart-warming reading about all my favourite characters from the Kleypas world, especially Sebastian and Evie 。。。 If you like Insta-Love trope, I highly recommend this book 。 Lisa Kleypas has always been the queen of historical romance for me 。。。。Her novels are always entertaining , sweet and fascinating 。 But this novel has the " Insta- Love , Insta everything " kinda trope , which I don't tolerate at all 😂😂 。。。And because of that I didn't like the srory but at the same time it was heart-warming reading about all my favourite characters from the Kleypas world, especially Sebastian and Evie 。。。 If you like Insta-Love trope, I highly recommend this book 。 。。。more

That should make him 37 at minimum。 How old are Phoebe and Merritt supposed to be? According to my timeline, 34 and 35, but apparently not。 A small thing in the grand scheme of the book, but it really bothered me someone who likes to keep track of the timelines of all the interconnected books。 Plus the random miracle pregnancy was such a slap in the face。 Let them adopt a bunch of kids for crying out loud。 。。。more

Seb and Evie used to be one of my favorite couples of HR, but after this nth rehash of their family situation I am thoroughly bored with them。 My favorite wallflower being completely fine with Sebastian having an illegitimate child also grated on my nerves: where’s the astute young woman who took her life in her own hands at 22? She certainly isn’t the same person as this book’s insipid matron who ‘wants to see the good in everyone’。 I’m sorry, but I can’t stand sequels retconning previous books in such a blatant way。 And it’s depressing that I’ve come to feel this way merely because this sequel reads like a cheap soap opera。 Did we need the Marsdens and the St。 Vincents becoming in laws? I don’t think so。 Merritt’s story would’ve been much more compelling if it’d actually been her own, and not a rehash of the dynamics between her parents and their friends。And last but not least, I had HUGE problems with this book’s approach to fertility。 Both Merritt and Keir’s mother had trouble conceiving a child before Sebastian and his son came along。 See, these poor infertile women only needed the right man! The book ends with Marcus and Sebastian bragging about their virility, illegitimate and abandoned children notwithstanding。 Can you imagine a historical romance having a more callous and chauvinistic ending? For the first time while reading a LK novel, I am aghast。The one part I truly enjoyed was the bonus marmalade cake recipe at the end, which sounds delicious and I plan to recreate。 。。。more

The Wallflowers are my absolute favorite historicals, so I will never not be excited when they pop up! I did not take umbrage with Simon having a love child, it was in his pre-Evie days and he was demonstrably a completely different, terrible man before he had Evie and Jenner's and a purpose in life。 We all love him BECAUSE he's a reformed rake! These things have inevitable complications we often ignore in our "reformed rake" tropes (no shade, they are my favorite kinds!) Evie and Seb have had 30 years of relationship building and she's the most saintly wallflower。 Kleypas even smartly had her supportive of Sebastian's search for his bastard as soon as he found out about the existence of one, so we know she isn't too rocked by this revelation。 It was before their marriage, Evie knew she was marrying a complete man whore。 I also like that she gave Kier a loving adoptive family; we didn't have to deal with Sebastian tormenting himself about a bastard who grew up in terrible circumstances。 Merritt and Kier had a bit of insta love, but Kleypas is so good at dialogue I did not mind。 Very enjoyable relationships between everyone-- obviously Kleypas likes writing Sebastian and I can't blame her, she does it so well! I would have liked to spend some more time with some of the ancillary characters, Phoebe and Merritt have such a great rapport, as do Merritt and her little brother (Luke?)。Weakest parts for me were the murder plot--Kier is secretly an heir to (bare with me) Sebastian's paramaour's husband's viscountcy, since she had him while married, and she told her terrible husband he was still born so he wouldn't murder him, not wanting another man's by-blow to be his heir。 Besides two believable but botched murder attempts at the very beginning of the book, the last murder attempt was real weak。 Like, they know someone has hired a hit on Kier, but they don't know how many people or what kinds of people and everyone seems cool with Ransom sending just two bodyguards to suss it out with Kier (and headstrong Merritt since she's going to do what she wants) as bait。 I thought Lillian and Westcliff would 100% have had Westcliff go after Merritt as soon as they realized she flew the coop to go protect Keir with her fine marksmanship。 The ending seemed super half baked and rushed。 Merritt travels to Islay by herself while they are literally waiting for assassins to show themselves and no one makes a real effort to get her out of imminent danger。 Literally Ransoms master plan was "well I'll just send 2 bodyguards who will be constantly watching you guys, nothing will get by us! Feel free to be distracted and bone non-stop, no need to be extra vigilant for these few days! You even have a dog, no assassin could possibly get past this dream team!" As it turns it, they were right--there were only two assassins, the first semi competent one from the early 2 attempts killed the cockolded viscount who hired the hit in the first place due to non payment, and the second was easily foiled by a rolling whiskey barrel, obvs。 Then there was the unsolved issue of where theyd live。 Merritt literally runs a shipping business and Keir runs a distillery, they both love their jobs and their own locations (city London vs remote Islay) which is just, a really really giant hurdle that sort of wasn't resolved。 It was sort of a "love will find a way" solution with maybe Keir running a school on his new viscountcy lands we assume he will have no problem inheriting? But the man was all about Islay and the whiskey and now no? I also didn't mind that Merritt was not actually barren, it's a historical romance, this is what we come for, a HEA。 Biggest disappointment for me was no real mention of Simon and Annabelle。 In this next generation, men of Simons influence (wealthy businessman/non aristo) would be even more common/important, and fairly applicable to this story。 I really felt myself hoping Simon would pop up and encourage Keir with his happy example of a marriage of commoner/aristocracy。 I used to place Annabelle and Simon as my third favorite of the original 4, but after rereads I really think they are up there with Seb and Evie for me。 Just such a well fleshed out book relationship。 WHERE IS SIMON?? Anyhow, seems like I had a lot of criticism, but it was a really enjoyable read。 I feel like she's back in her groove of writing fun stories。 Nothing I'd as fully formed as the 1st three wallflowers or a lot of the Hathaway's, but I enjoyed this one just as much as Devil's Daughter (I think I'm still scared from the wackadoodle Pandora in Devil in Spring) 。。。more

I am relatively new but very ardent fan of Lisa Kleypas and Devil in Disguise hit a sweet spots for me! The romance between Keir and Merritt was just so adorably swoony and like Merritt, I honestly wanted to wrap Keir up in cotton wool。This book is part of the Ravenel series but we don’t really see characters from there and instead I would classify this as more of a Wallflowers Second Generation book。 (Merritt, now a widow and head of shipping company, is Lillian’s and Marcus’ daughter!)。 We see I am relatively new but very ardent fan of Lisa Kleypas and Devil in Disguise hit a sweet spots for me! Kleypas is a deft writer but this story is so dull。 Nothing really is happening。 There was a pointless amnesia subplot。 The conclusion was anti climatic。 I know a lot of people are upset at with who the hero's father is but it was all so meh I found it hard to muster more than a shrug。 The story also felt too modern but then I think that is a problem in general in this genre。 The epilogue was ridiculous and does a huge disservice to those living with infertility。 This book felt like a tv show wh Kleypas is a deft writer but this story is so dull。 Nothing really is happening。 There was a pointless amnesia subplot。 The conclusion was anti climatic。 I know a lot of people are upset at with who the hero's father is but it was all so meh I found it hard to muster more than a shrug。 The story also felt too modern but then I think that is a problem in general in this genre。 The epilogue was ridiculous and does a huge disservice to those living with infertility。 This book felt like a tv show where the writer room is lazy and just pulls out old clips with a weak frame to contain it all。 。。。more

This is the first book I read by Lisa Kleypas and enjoyed it。It's engrossing, highly entertaining and I rooted for the characters。I think that some characters were featured in other series and I was left wondering if I missed something。My only issue is that the romance was a bit weak and too fast。 The characters are interesting but their chemistry was somehow lacking。It's an entertaining read and I recommend it。Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine This is the first book I read by Lisa Kleypas and enjoyed it。It's engrossing, highly entertaining and I rooted for the characters。I think that some characters were featured in other series and I was left wondering if I missed something。My only issue is that the romance was a bit weak and too fast。 The characters are interesting but their chemistry was somehow lacking。It's an entertaining read and I recommend it。Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine 。。。more
